Cowboys offseason countdown: 99 facts until the regular season (Day 85)

We are at day 85 of our 99 day countdown until the regular season. Here is your daily fact associated with number 85.

During his tenure in Dallas, Roy Williams gained considerable recognition for various accomplishments. Among his notable achievements was his remarkable 85-yard interception return for a touchdown against Washington during his rookie season.

Williams became a member of the Dallas Cowboys in 2002 following his selection as a top-10 draft pick. Renowned for his hard-hitting nature, his aggressive style of play often ignited on-field disputes and off-field discussions, labeling him as a controversial player. However, his rookie season proved to be exceptional while partnered with the great Darren Woodson, and he even managed to establish a then franchise record for the most interceptions returned for a touchdown in a single season (2).

His method of tackling eventually led to the creation of the “horse-collar” rule, a regulation that he found challenging to adhere to throughout his career. In fact, his repeated violations of this rule and the resulting player injuries led to a suspension in 2007.

Williams was released in 2009, and his three pick-6’s still rank as the fourth-highest for Dallas. Additionally, his 417 career tackles place him with the 11th-most. Currently, he provides sideline reports for the Oklahoma Sooners.
