How can any Cowboys fan talk about the number 53 without mentioning Mark Stepnoski?

Mark Matthew Stepnoski was born on January 20, 1967, and was chosen by Dallas in the third round of the 1989 NFL draft. His tumble in the draft was attributed to a recurring issue that would follow him throughout his NFL career – his size. Standing at just 6 feet 2 inches and weighing barely 270 pounds, he was considered too small to play as an offensive lineman in the professional league.

The 1989 draft and season will forever be etched in the memories of many Cowboys fans due to the selection of Troy Aikman, who became the cornerstone of the team’s offensive prowess in the 1990s. However, the addition of key offensive players like Daryl Johnston in the second round and Stepnoski in the third round further solidified the team’s draft class that year. This draft proved to be remarkably efficient in team history, with Stepnoski turning out to be a valuable asset that went unnoticed by many at the time.

Stepnoski ended up becoming the linchpin of the Cowboys offensive line, despite being undersized. This spoke about his skill set as a player when he was surrounded by so many prominent figures with imposing physical presences. Despite the spotlight shining on players such as Nate Newton, Erik Williams, Mark Tuinei, and Larry Allen, Stepnoski’s contributions were equally significant. His responsibilities ranged from directing line plays to offering stability at the center position. Despite being one of the smallest linemen on the team, Stepnoski compensated with exceptional technique and razor sharp awareness.

During Stepnoski’s time on the field, there were no doubts about his ability to play the center position. Stepnoski’s presence in the middle was often seen as a major strength for the team. Every legend who played on the offensive line, as well as opponents who faced Stepnoski, all concur that he was among the best centers in the league during his playing days.

Stepnoski spent 13 seasons in the National Football League, with stints in both Dallas and Houston. During his career, he achieved five consecutive Pro Bowl selections, three All-Pro honors, and was named to the National Football League 1990s All-Decade team. His contributions were instrumental in Dallas winning Super Bowls, and he played a key role for a unit that supported Emmitt Smith in becoming the NFL’s all-time leading rusher.
