2 internal and external options Cowboys should consider after Chuma Edoga’s injury

In most regards the Dallas Cowboys had a pretty successful preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday, despite losing the contest in the final seconds of the game. One thing that may come back to haunt them from the matchup though is Chuma Edoga’s unfortunate injury.

The good news is Edoga’s injury isn’t of the season-ending variety, but any kind of injury like the one he sustained to his toe could cause him to miss multiple regular-season games. And if it’s not allowed to heal properly, could linger into the season making his availability even more up in the air.

To further complicate matters, the Cowboys depth at offensive tackle took another hit when Earl Bostick was injured with a lower leg injury. Bostick is heading back to Dallas to have surgery so he will also miss a chunk of time.

This is what probably led the Cowboys to sign OT Cohl Carson Wednesday afternoon. He’s another body to hopefully provide some depth and competition to the position, but one that has little to no actual playing experience in the league. The Cowboys could look internally, or bring in some help like they have been doing to fill needs on defense.

2 internal options they may consider

  • Matt Waletzko – The Cowboys 2022 fifth-round pick is an in-house option right now to replace Chuma Edoga for as long as his injury keeps him sidelined. While it’s true he struggled with injuries of his own and has mainly been a right tackle, he has a shot to potentially earn the swing OT job.
  • Asim Richards – The 2023 fifth-round draft pick is someone Mike McCarthy has already mentioned as someone who will get some work at left tackle behind Tyler Guyton. He is probably the favorite in-house candidate to take over as the swing tackle this year for as long as Chuma Edoga is out with a toe injury.

2 external options they should consider

  • Kelvin Beachum, Arizona Cardinals The 12-year veteran currently finds himself buried on the depth chart in Arizona and could be in jeopardy of even making the final 53-roster. The 35-year-old has experience at both right and left tackle and could be acquired fairly cheaply via trade. His longevity in the league would add some much-needed experience on the Cowboys OL and could be a great swing tackle option in 2024 for Dallas.
  • Larry Borom, Chicago Bears The Bears 2021 fifth-round draft pick out of Missouri is currently buried on the depth chart in Chicago. The 25-year-old has started 23 career games at both RT and LT, which is more than anybody else currently on the Cowboys roster. His youth and starting experience would make him an upgrade in Dallas and could be acquired via trade with nothing more than a 2025 late-round pick.
