Despite rough last season, Dalvin Cook provides more experience to running back by committee

The Dallas Cowboys made another free agency signing on Wednesday morning, bringing in four-time Pro Bowl RB Dalvin Cook.

This comes just one day after Cook visited with the team for a workout, where he was described as “looking good and in shape”.

The former Minnesota Vikings running back reunites with his former head coach Mike Zimmer, and joins a backfield that has questions about their new running-back-by-committee plan. This feels like a great situation for Cook, as he has the opportunity to play for a playoff contender while also being able to contribute to a key role on the field. While Cook is being signed to the team’s practice squad, it’s hard to imagine a player of his pedigree not being on the active roster on Sunday’s once he gets acclimated.

Cook undoubtedly had a poor last season. He spent time with both the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens, and struggled to find his footing in their systems while dealing with nagging injuries. He rushed 67 times for 214 yards and zero touchdowns. His 3.2 yards per carry easily marks the lowest of his career. With that said, in 2022 Cook accumulated 1,173 yards on the ground with eight rushing touchdowns on 4.4 yards per carry. He ran for 1,000+ yards for four straight seasons with the Vikings between 2019-2022.

Cook may be on the back-end of his career, but so is recently-signed Ezekiel Elliott. Neither running backs are in their prime, but together could be a productive tandem in a running back-by-committee approach. Adding RB Rico Dowdle with them, and the Cowboys running back room might not be as big of a weakness as once thought.
