A silver lining to CeeDee Lamb being absent from camp: Brandin Cooks
Perhaps nothing has been more frustrating for Cowboys fans this offseason than waiting for WR CeeDee Lamb to be signed to a long-term extension. Ever since Jerry Jones’ infamous quote of “letting the leaves fall”, every wide receiver extension across the league has emphasized the fact that Lamb has yet to receive his deal. Coming off a season where Lamb broke the Cowboys single-season record in receptions and yards, it’s hard to fathom why he hasn’t received the massive payday he deserves yet. With all that said, there is a silver lining to Lamb holding out from training camp. It has allowed QB Dak Prescott to sharpen his connection with WR Brandin Cooks.
While Lamb had his record-breaking season last year, the wide receiver across from him experienced a very different season. Veteran Brandin Cooks entered last season registering at least 1,000 receiving yards in six of his nine seasons in the league. With high-expectations to be the WR2 in Dallas, Cooks got off to a slow start. He didn’t surpass 50 receiving yards in a game until week nine of the 2023 season, when he had 173 yards against the New York Giants. Still, this was the only game all season where Cooks surpassed 100 yards. He finished the season with 657 yards, the lowest since 2019 when he had 583 with the Los Angeles Rams.
While it appeared Prescott and Cooks weren’t always on the same page last season, the veteran wide receiver did have some big-time touchdowns for the team in key moments.
It is without question that Cooks has the talent and experience to be a big-time contributor to the Cowboys offense in 2024. Without Lamb, Cooks is undoubtedly the team’s number one receiver. Fortunately, having another full offseason to enhance his chemistry with Prescott could be big for the team. The one silver lining of Lamb missing camp could be Prescott getting more work in with the other receivers on the roster.
Mike McCarthy said Brandin Cooks has had a “helluva camp” and two out of three catches he’s made in training camp have gone for a TD or a big play. pic.twitter.com/VFayj8WFw3
