Cowboys edge rusher Sam Williams tears ACL, will miss 2024 season

The Dallas Cowboys got some terrible news on Sunday. During training camp practice, defensive end Sam Williams went down with a knee injury and had to be carted off the field. Team owner Jerry Jones said that the team didn’t like what they saw, and an MRI has confirmed the worst possible outcome as the former second-round pick has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the 2024 season.

The Cowboys are no stranger to ACL tears as All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs and 2023 third-round linebacker DeMarvion Overshown are currently rehabbing the same setback from a year ago. This is devastating for Williams, who was looking to take the leap in his performance that he didn’t quite reach in his second season. Dallas was already dealing with depth issues at defensive end with a healthy Williams now that Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler are with the Washington Commanders. This does give guys like rookie Marshawn Kneeland and Junior Fehoko more opportunities to showcase what they can do.

The Cowboys still need to add a veteran. There are some free agent names available, with the most noticeable being Carl Lawson and Yannick Ngakoue. Dallas certainly needs to pick up the phone and find a way to patch up this hole on the edge quickly.
