Cowboys news: Dallas signs pass rusher Carl Lawson
You have to give credit where credit is due. The Cowboys are over three weeks into training camp and have enough information to realize they have a need worth addressing. Within the last 12 hours, they have done just that by adding two veteran defensive linemen to help bolster the group.
The first of which was a trade that brought defensive tackle Jordan Phillips in from the rival New York Giants. Now they are signing veteran pass rusher Carl Lawson. He brings immediate production and adds a proven commodity to a group that has a lot of inexperience behind Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.
Cowboys sign EDGE Carl Lawson
It’s a move many had hoped they would make a couple of weeks ago when they brought him in for a workout originally. However, at that time, the Cowboys went in a different direction by signing two other players, Shaka Toney and Al-Quadin Muhammad. Toney has since been waived with an injury designation, setting up bringing Lawson into the fold after all.
Lawson has had an injury history that’s kept him off the field throughout his career; however, when he’s on the field, he has made plays. He has tallied 27 sacks in 73 games, has 150 pressures, 83 QB hits, and a pressure percentage of 13.1%.
He played only six games last season and none at all in 2021. However, he played all 17 games in 2022, a feat he has only accomplished twice in his career. If healthy, he can be a great addition to this team, and with so much uncertainty behind Parsons and Lawrence, the move felt necessary.
Now, with over three weeks and two preseason games left to get acclimated to the roster, Lawson has a chance to play an important role in this Cowboys defense for 2024.
