Cowboys news: Ezekiel Elliott looking forward to joint practice against the L.A. Rams

The Dallas Cowboys veteran running back is excited to get back to football.
“I think it’s good to see a different style of defense, to see a different defense and a different system,” said the former two-time NFL rushing champ on Tuesday. “I know we have a lot of vets, and vets probably won’t play in the preseason, so it’s good to get some different looks in practice and those joint practices are a different speed — it’s good for us to get those reps.”
Elliott will be one of many first-teamers who will not see the field come Sunday at SoFi Stadium in the preseason opener, and getting reps against the Rams in joint practice will go a long way in helping him to sharpen himself ahead of his ninth regular season.
That means both on the ground and in the air.
“I take pride in being an all-around back,” said the two-time All-Pro. “I want to be viable in all assets of the game.”
There is a lot on the line for the Cowboys this coming season, including the contractual status of head coach Mike McCarthy, who is looking to take another step in making his No. 1-ranked offense that much better by, this time around, having a rushing attack that can supremely complement what Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and others can produce in the air.
Elliott understands there is no way of knowing when his next year will be his final one, so it’s all about capitalizing on the now; and that’s a theme that is permeating Cowboys’ camp this year.
Dallas Cowboys release unofficial depth chart for preseason game against Los Angeles Rams – RJ Ochoa, Blogging the Boys
The first unofficial depth chart for Dallas brings about a few questions.
Remember, as always, that this is unofficial so there is no need to overreact to anything. That being said… some 30,000-foot takeaways:
– CeeDee Lamb is still listed as WR1
– Chuma Edoga is listed as the starting left tackle
– Cooper Rush is listed as QB2 with Trey Lance as QB3
– Ezekiel Elliott is listed as the starting running back despite all the “he’ll just handle goal line and short yardage” talk
– Mazi Smith is in fact listed as a starter
– Marist Liufau is listed ahead of DeMarvion Overshown
There are of course no official things that we need to seriously draw from this, but it is all a part of the process that leads us up to the regular season.
Remember that in addition to the preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams (which is the whole reason behind this unofficial depth chart) that the Cowboys will scrimmage against them on Thursday.
We will able to draw a lot more from how they line up and what they look like then.
Former Dallas Cowboys running back, first-round pick, has died – Brian Linder, PennLive.com
The Cowboys mourn the loss of former first-round pick Duane Thomas, age 77.
Thomas played collegiately at West Texas State, and was taken in the first-round, 23rd-overall, of the 1970 draft by the Cowboys. He had stints with the Charges, Redskins and Packers, too, before wrapping up his career in 1979.
Thomas led the Cowboys in rushing as a rookie, running for 803 yards, and was named NFL Rookie of the Year. He helped the team win the Super Bowl that year, and reportedly asked for a restructured contract. Instead, Dallas traded him to New England, but when he refused to report there, NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle voided the deal and sent him back to Dallas, per the Dallas Morning News.
He was eventually traded away from Dallas to the Charges following his second season.
Thomas finished his career with 453 carries for 2,038 yards and 21 touchdowns, and also caught 38 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns.
FOX Sports’ Erin Andrews Gives Her Thoughts On The Dallas Cowboys And Reveals A Career Goal Of Hers – DJ Siddiqi, Forbes.com
The FOX Sports reporter knows a thing or two about the Cowboys, having covered many of their games over the years.
Andrews — who has been with Fox Sports since 2012 and has served as the lead sideline reporter since 2014 — is in the midst of preparing for another season covering the NFL. And with FOX Sports featuring a heavy number of Dallas Cowboys games on their slate, there won’t be any shortage of storylines entering the 2024 season.
“Some of the ones that we have our eyes on with our broadcast team is — obviously we’re Dallas Cowboys heavy on our schedule — they have to work to get CeeDee Lamb‘s contract done,” says Andrews in a one-on-one interview. “I know that they will. They have a new defensive coordinator (Mike Zimmer) and last time I saw Dallas was the last time everybody else saw them and that was their loss at home to the Packers (in the playoffs).”
The Cowboys will open up the 2024 season in a big matchup with the Cleveland Browns — who were a playoff team last season — on FOX. That doesn’t include other big matchups on Dallas’ early-season schedule, including the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 and the Detroit Lions in Week 6, which Andrews and FOX Sports will be covering.
“That connection between Dak and CeeDee was kind of struggling that day,” Andrews says of the Cowboys’ 48-32 playoff loss to the Packers last January. “Dak was coming off a huge year. How does he do this year? There’s a lot of talk. Is he going to re-sign in Dallas? You could close your eyes and come up with 8000 storylines for the Cowboys and that’s why we love having them.”
