We are at day 23 of our 99 day countdown until the regular season. Here is your daily fact associated with number 23.
One of the greatest comeback victories in Cowboys history came while trailing 23-3 to Washington at halftime.
In 1983, the Dallas Cowboys faced Washington in the opening week at RFK Memorial Stadium. The significance of the game was considerable, as Washington aimed to commence the season on a positive note and set the stage for a substantial playoff journey. The game unfolded with Washington dominating early, as they scored ten consecutive points in the first quarter. Although the Cowboys managed to advance down the field in the second quarter and secure a field goal, that was quickly followed by another 13 unanswered points from Washington.
As the second half commenced, the Cowboys found themselves in a challenging position, determined to mount a comeback. Danny White and Tony Hill delivered an impressive performance, showcasing a formidable passing attack. From the restart kickoff to the final offensive series in the fourth quarter, Danny White was instrumental in scoring all four of the team’s touchdowns. He led Dallas to an impressive 28 consecutive points, in what is regarded as one of the greatest Monday Night Football games, featuring a remarkable one-handed catch for the second touchdown.
Ultimately, the Cowboys concluded the season in second place in the NFC East, trailing Washington, who suffered only two losses that year. Dallas was eliminated in the Wild Card round, while Washington went on to become the runner-up in Super Bowl XVIII.
