The year was 2011 and the Dallas Cowboys were seeking to emerge from a series of disappointing seasons, while simultaneously contending with a rising San Francisco 49ers team that was also grappling with a streak of unfavorable endings to their seasons.
In Week 2, they faced each other and the game became an instant classic. With home field advantage, San Francisco took an early 14-point lead. For Dallas, Miles Austin would go on to have a career game but the game looked doomed when Tony Romo would leave the field with a punctured lung.
Austin delivered an exceptionally productive performance during the game. He scored a 53-yard touchdown before halftime thrown by Romo, and later in the third quarter, he concluded a five-play drive with another touchdown, taking advantage of an interception by the Cowboys defense.
With the score standing at 24-14 in favor of the 49ers, everyone was in astonishment as Romo, despite suffering from a punctured lung, made his return to the field. The drive commenced with Romo being sacked, eliciting grimaces from the spectators. However, just eight plays later, Romo successfully connected with Austin for a 25-yard touchdown, showcasing an impressive athletic catch as he high-pointed the ball and extended for the end zone. This marked Austin’s third touchdown of the day, but he was far from done.
During the subsequent offensive drive, Romo and Austin successfully connected on two occasions, enabling Dan Bailey to convert a field goal that leveled the score. In overtime, Romo located Jesse Holley, who executed a remarkable 78-yard reception, allowing Bailey to return to the field and secure the victory with a final score of 27-24. This exhilarating comeback marked a significant win for Dallas, contributing to one of the three defeats experienced by the 49ers in 2011. The Cowboys concluded the season with an 8-8 record, placing third in the NFC East.
