Super Bowl XXX - Dallas Cowboys vs Pittsburgh Steelers - January 28, 1996

Super Bowl XXX is famous not only for being the final time the Cowboys secured a Lombardi, but also for a multitude of standout moments. Larry Brown made history as the first cornerback to win Super Bowl MVP, it was the highest-rated television event at the time, the Cowboys ultimately equaled San Francisco for the most Super Bowl victories (5) and finally got their revenge on Pittsburgh for two past Super Bowl losses.

Following the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first possession, a pivotal moment in the game unfolded. The Cowboys defense successfully forced a three-and-out, prompting the Steelers to punt the ball. Deion Sanders then executed an 11-yard return, setting the stage for the Cowboys’ offense to take the field for the second time, aiming to surpass their previous drive that ended in a field goal. As the drive began, Emmitt Smith would make two runs, then the crowd witnessed a surprising move as Deion Sanders stepped in to play as a wide receiver. Troy Aikman received the ball from the snap, scanned the field, and launched a deep bomb directly to Sanders. The outcome of the play was a remarkable 47-yard catch, making Sanders the first player in history to achieve a Super Bowl interception on defense and a reception on offense.

Thanks to that early lead, the Cowboys would go on to win Super Bowl XXX and earn the franchise’s fifth Lombardi.

The 47-yard play by Sanders was instrumental in motivating the Cowboys to use him as a wide receiver the next year, establishing him as the first two-way player since the 1960s.
