Cowboys QB Dak Prescott on if deal needs to be done before season: ‘It says a lot if it is or isn’t’

By this time next week the Dallas Cowboys will be full on preparing for their Week 1 road game against the Cleveland Browns. It stands to reason that by then the group will have put themselves in a place of tunnel vision for the season as a whole.

It is for this reason that many have assumed that if the Cowboys do not have an extension in place with quarterback Dak Prescott by then that one will not be coming, at least throughout the course of the regular season. In addition to how hectic the season and its schedule can be, with it having begun Prescott would be ever closer to the offseason and a truly open market, something that quarterbacks in their prime years rarely reach.

You may not believe that he will have suitors if he gets there. Perhaps you want to see it happen. We have had these conversations many different times.

But if you do agree that the most likely time for an extension is at some point over the next 6-7 days then it would stand to reason that we are in for a potentially seismic decision one way or the other.

It appears Prescott agrees.

Dak Prescott offered quite the line when asked if he thinks a deal needs to be done before the season

We have all watched Dak Prescott quarterback the Cowboys for almost a decade now. This is his ninth season with the team and he has entered them all as the unquestioned starter (obviously the circumstances around his first season were unique to say the last).

If you have paid attention to anything about Prescott off of the football field in that time then you know that he is fairly measured when speaking. Purposeful is maybe a better way to put it.

Prescott spoke on Thursday and was asked about something that Jerry Jones was himself one day earlier. During a press conference on Wednesday, Jerry said he did not believe there was any sort of hard deadline to get a Prescott deal done before the season began like many people have been assuming.

Asked the same question on Thursday, Prescott said that whether a deal was done by then would send a message. One way or another.

This could obviously be a bit of negotiating through the media or just Dak talking out loud, so to speak. But it does seem a bit pointed from someone who rarely speaks like that.

If you consider that to be a bit pointed then prepare for something that is more specific. When told that Jerry offered comments about the situation during the presser as mentioned, Dak noted that he stopped listening to things Jerry says in the media a long time ago.

There is no audio here and it is worth mentioning that maybe the tone behind it is more lighthearted in nature. But the quote certainly reads like someone who is ready for this situation to be over one way or the other which is why it stands to reason that if the season does begin without a contract in place that it might not happen at all.

We continue to wait.

For what, though?

Who knows.
