Cowboys sign veteran edge rushers Al-Quadin Muhammad and Shaka Toney

The Dallas Cowboys got put into quite a bind when edge rusher Sam Williams was lost for the season with a torn ACL last week. The Cowboys did not sit on their hands with the situation and had several veteran pass rushers in for a workout, and on Thursday, they agreed to terms with Al-Quadin Muhammad and Shaka Toney.

Muhammad is a former sixth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2017. He would only appear in four games and logged just one tackle before getting waived. He would spend the next four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, where he played in 64 games with 25 starts and amassed 11 sacks, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

In 2022, Muhammad signed with the Chicago Bears. He played in 16 games with nine starts that season and registered 29 tackles and one sack. Muhammad returned to the Colts on a one-year deal in January of 2023. After being released last August and re-signing to the practice squad in December, Muhammad was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing drug policy.

Toney was a seventh-round pick of the Washington Commanders in 2021. He played in 26 games with one start during his first two seasons and logged 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He would miss the entire 2023 season after being suspended indefinitely for betting on games during the 2022 campaign. He was reinstated in April.

Both players bring depth and experience to the Cowboys edge rusher group. With All-Pro Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence leading the way, both will battle rookie Marshawn Kneeland for reps as the third guy off the edge for the Cowboys in 2024.
