Cowboys’ tight end Peyton Hendershot named a cut candidate
The start of NFL training camps is finally upon us. With 2023 behind us, the organization and the fans can now turn their attention to the 2024 season as the Dallas Cowboys look to get the bad taste out of their mouth left by a tough ending to last season.
The ‘Boys are headed to Oxnard, CA, to begin training camp, as they work to field the best team they can in 2024. With that comes some tough decisions, and with a new, unsettled feeling around the team this year, at least one Cowboys player could be feeling that as well while being on the outside looking in when all is said and done.
Is Peyton Hendershot a cut candidate?
This training camp could be even bigger than we realize for Peyton Hendershot according to Pro Football Network. The veteran TE has been named as a potential cut candidate.
Peyton Hendershot was active for all 17 games in 2022 after joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. But his playing time plummeted in 2023 and the Cowboys now have better depth at tight end. He’s a clear release candidate.
The second-year TE only saw eight games of action in 2023 after playing in all 17 in his rookie year. Most of that was due to an injury that landed him on the injured reserve for most of the season, but the NFL is a what have you done for me lately league, and in the case of Hendershot, the answer is not much.
Coupled with the fact that both starter Jake Ferguson and TE2 Luke Schoonmaker are comfortably locked in on the roster, it leaves room for only one, maybe two more tight ends to make the roster.
With intriguing prospect John Stephens Jr. expected to be back from a torn ACL and rookie UDFA Brevyn Spann-Ford garnering a lot of attention, it leaves a lot of ground to make up for Hendershot if he is going to stick around.
It’s not impossible for Hendershot to change the fortunes of his future, but it will take a fast start in training camp to make it happen. He isn’t that far removed from being a true receiving threat in the offense like he was his rookie year. However, with that gap in production in 2023 and the ever-changing way rosters are constructed, Hendershot is going to need to do everything he can to get back in the team’s good graces and stay around.
