Since Trevon Diggs got hurt during a freak incident leading up to Week 3 of last year, Dallas Cowboys fans and Diggs himself have been waiting to hear these two little words—“He’s back.” With the star cornerback officially removed from the PUP list and able to rejoin his teammates on the football field, it signals the return of one of the league’s most feared secondary defenders.

Coupled with his running mate, DaRon Bland, who looked like a reincarnated version of Diggs in 2023, the two make things very interesting for the Cowboys’ defense this year.

Trevin Diggs being back is a huge deal for the Dallas Cowboys

When looking at the construction of an NFL defense, there are a couple of different ways to build it out. You can start front to back, or vice versa. Many believe having a ferocious pass rush is the best path to success, while others feel like having superstar cornerbacks who are sticky in coverage is the way to go.

Luckily for the Cowboys, they have both, but the re-emergence of Diggs in their secondary has a chance to have a real domino effect for this Cowboys pass rush and defensive unit as a whole.

The entire league knows who Bland is now, and with Mr. Pick-Six back to build off of a historic season, Diggs’s being on the opposite side of him allows Bland to be even greedier than last year. The same could be said for Diggs as well, as he himself has never had a running mate quite like Bland, either.

The combination of the two makes for the best ball-production cornerback duo in the NFL and will keep opposing quarterbacks up at night. However, Diggs’ presence doesn’t just stop there. He can also help Micah Parsons and the pack of pass rushers.

With quarterbacks having to give a second thought before letting a pass go against these cornerbacks, that indecision helps the likes of Parsons and the Boys get home more often. The NFL is all about timing, and if elite corners are able to be so sticky in coverage that they throw that off, or cause a moment of doubt, players like Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence should be the beneficiaries.

The Cowboys, mainly this defense, know they ended the season with a bad taste in their mouths. Using that hurt, mixed with star players like Diggs back in the fold, angry and eager, sets up a situation where the best may be yet to come, and it all can start with the return of one man.
