Cowboys training camp battles: Fierce competition among the defensive backs

Since Al Harris joined the staff as the defensive backs coach, the Dallas Cowboys’ DBs have been excellent at taking the ball away. This season, the secondary is going to feature two NFL interception leaders in Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. Many expect Diggs and Bland to continue to make interceptions this season, but the other DBs at camp are adamant in proving that they have ball skills as well. Today, they did just that.

Diggs is starting off camp on the PUP list, with hopes that he will start practicing with the team in the coming weeks. While we’d all love to see him back at practice, his absence does give way for others like Nahshon Wright to get some reps. Wright did a pretty solid job standing in for Diggs clamping down on Brandon Cooks.

Bland looks like he hasn’t missed a single step this offseason. This beautiful interception is reflective of so many he has had in the past. He does a great job baiting the throw and then attacking the ball for the INT. It doesn’t look like he is willing to give up his interception leader crown anytime soon.

Jourdan Lewis looks like he is all the way back to form after a problematic foot injury in 2022. He reminded everyone today that he is not to be messed with. His reach for this ball is almost as impressive as the toe touch to land it. It might be hard to stand out with Diggs and Bland taking up so much of the spotlight, but Lewis is a scrappy DB that knows how to take the ball away as well.

Josh Butler spent most of the season last year on the practice squad and is working hard at camp to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. He is set on proving he is a dawg (see celebration) this season and he’s off to a great start too. Butler does a great job jumping to get the ball and showing strong hands to ensure that WR Racey McMath couldn’t knock the ball out or take the ball for himself.

The rookie Caelen Carson, like Diggs, was a former WR that converted to a DB. He earned himself the nickname “Seat Belt” by doing a great job of locking down WR’s in college, but now he wants to follow in Diggs’ and Bland’s footsteps and be known as an INT machine as well. According to Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com, Al Harris has been working closely with the fifth-round draft pick and has taught him the “secret sauce” to getting interceptions. Thanks to Nicole Hutchison’s tweet, we can see that the “secret sauce” is working, and Carson snagged a pick in Thursday’s practice.

The starting DBs for the Cowboys are pretty set with Diggs, Bland and Lewis, but these other DBs are working hard to prove that they deserve a spot on this roster. It is only the second day of camp, but they are off to a very hot start. It will be very exciting to see this trend continue throughout the rest of training camp and the preseason.
