Cowboys training camp: Journeyman receiver turns heads at practice

So far through Dallas Cowboys training camp, injuries are starting to take their toll. Chuma Edoga was injured last week with a broken toe and will be sidelined for a while. Along the offensive line, Earl Bostick Jr. will be out indefinitely after suffering a fractured leg at practice. Thankfully, there was a sigh of relief as Brandin Cooks left practice Thursday with what was later discovered as nothing more than knee soreness. If the Cowboys weren’t already thin at offensive line and wide receiver, recent events have eaten into their depth. However, as they say, there’s always a next man up.

The offense didn’t have much to write home about following their game last week against the Los Angeles Rams. There were very few bright spots, but one was Kelvin Harmon. Historically, the Cowboys have been fortunate to find help in unlikely places, mining the undrafted market and finding diamonds in the rough. Harmon is unlikely as it could come, considering the Cowboys didn’t draft him. If Harmon can contribute during the preseason and in practices, it will benefit his case, and the third-team offense is looking to bounce back this week.

Harmon has bounced around since being drafted by the Washington in the sixth round of the 2019 draft and spending time with the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL before landing with the Cowboys following a stint with the DC Defenders of the XFL.

Against Los Angeles, Harmon made a terrific play on a catch over the middle and barreling over a defender, and the being dragged down by a crowd of defenders to stop his forward progress. He made another great grab, catching the ball high over his head before being flipped head over heels but still maintaining possession of the football. On Thursday, he continued to make some nice plays at practice.

Harmon has great size at 6’2” and 215 lbs. but doesn’t have tremendous speed to separate from defenses. If he hopes to continue making an impression, it will be making plays like he did on Thursday and in last week’s game, using his toughness and excellent size to high-point the ball off the helmets of smaller defenders. With Cooks likely out for Saturday’s game and Jalen Tolbert too, expect to see more of Harmon against the Las Vegas Raiders this week.
