Cowboys training camp: Undrafted player stock watch

The Dallas Cowboys held another joint practice with the Rams on Wednesday following a walk-through. The practice produced some interesting storylines. One, in particular, was rookie offensive lineman Cooper Beebe taking first-team snaps at center, which would indicate that he is making a push to be the team’s starting center for Week 1 at the Cleveland Browns.

Following their game last Sunday, the Cowboys and Rams reunited for another joint practice Thursday. For the players on the bottom of the roster on offense, it was an opportunity to do more than the offense was able to do against Los Angeles on Sunday. Seizing on today’s opportunity was a name we have seen show up in Oxnard all summer.

Tyron Billy-Johnson, Wide receiver

During the preseason game Billy-Johnson was held without a target, but he contributed on kick returns, returning two for 70 yards. The team gave Billy-Johnson an expanded chance in that role as he joined KaVontae Turpin and took returns at today’s practice. The new kickoff rules benefit players with Billy-Johnson’s speed, and he has had NFL experience in that capacity, with 19 career returns for an average of 19.1 yards per run back.

You would expect both the Las Vegas Raiders and the Cowboys offenses to have more success this Saturday, creating more snaps for Billy-Johnson. Additionally, Johnson made an excellent play at receiver in today’s practice, making a diving catch for a touchdown on a pass from Trey Lance. With only two preseason games left and Jalen Cropper and Jalen Brooks making such an impression, Billy-Johnson has his work cut out to make the 53-man roster, but he could make things awfully interesting in the coming weeks.
