Cowboys vs Chargers: Dallas establishes ground game in preseason finale

The Dallas Cowboys completed their preseason schedule on Saturday afternoon as they hosted the Los Angeles Chargers. Like Dallas’ first two preseason matchups against the Rams and Raiders, almost all of their starters did not play. Despite this, the game still carried significance for many young players on the backend of Dallas’ roster.

Even though the Cowboys lost the game 26-19, a few players put up performances of note. While a couple of individual performances stood out, Dallas’ success on the ground was the biggest takeaway. The success of the Cowboys’ running backs, particularly Deuce Vaughn and Royce Freeman, earned the group the final preseason Star of the Game award.

Dallas finished the day running the ball 41 times for a total of 206 yards, an average of 6.0 Y/A. Every running back on the Cowboys’ roster (and QB Trey Lance) finished the game with at least 4.4 Y/A, showing just how efficient they were on the ground.

While it was primarily backups playing in this game on both sides, it’s hard not to feel at least a little good about Dallas’ success on the ground. It was a struggle for the Cowboys to run the ball last season, and they’ll need to be much more efficient in their rushing attack this season if they want to form a consistently dangerous offense.

If Dallas’ starters can build upon what their backups did in the preseason finale, their run game could look much better than it did at the end of last season.
