Cowboys’ WR CeeDee Lamb projected to break NFL’s regular season receptions record
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb was undoubtedly one of the three best wide receivers in football last season. The 25-year-old wideout finished the year with career-highs in nearly every statistical category, ending with 135 receptions (most in NFL), 1,749 receiving yards (second-most in NFL), and 12 receiving touchdowns. (second-most in NFL)
Lamb took the jump many believed he would and is now widely considered as one of the NFL’s elite receivers. After such a dominant season, expectations for Lamb’s 2024 campaign have been sky-high. So much so, in a recent article by Bleacher Report, Dallas’ wideout was projected to break the NFL regular season receptions record.
In a 10 bold predictions article, Lamb was singled out as having a chance to become an NFL record holder.
Let’s start with a bang, with a couple of records that could fall, beginning with CeeDee Lamb’s work in Big D. Eventually, Calvin Johnson’s historic season with 1,964 receiving yards will fall. It won’t be the year. However, Michael Thomas’ 149-catch campaign in 2019 is well within reach.
Lamb wasn’t far off the number last season. The Cowboys’ primary target led the league with 135 snags. Three factors play into the possibility of becoming the first wide receiver to grab 150 catches during the regular season. First, Lamb needs to average nearly nine catches per contest to make it happen. He and quarterback Dak Prescott were humming late last season. During the Cowboys final seven games (including their playoff appearance), Lamb averaged 9.4 yards per catch.
Second, Dallas did next-to-nothing to improve the situation around Lamb, who played all 17 regular-season contests in back-to-back years. The team still lacks a legitimate WR2 and Brandin Cooks is now one year older.
Finally, Lamb is in a contract year. If he doesn’t sign an extension between now and the start of the regular season, the first-team All-Pro will have something to prove and a message to send to the organization.
Those are some solid points, and it stands to reason if Lamb plays like he did in the final 12 regular-season games of last season he’s going to have a chance to break some records. In those 12 final regular-season games, Lamb totaled 108 receptions, an average of nine per game. That’s a 153-catch pace over a 17-game season, which would break Thomas’ record of 149.
CeeDee Lamb is going to do incredible things this season and for the rest of his career. If the Cowboys are smart, they’ll pick up the phone and make sure those things happen in Dallas.
