DeMarvion Overshown is a prime breakout candidate for the Cowboys this season

2023 third-round pick DeMarvion Overshown could have a big impact for the Cowboys this upcoming season. The former Texas Longhorns linebacker impressed the coaching staff in last year’s camp and preseason before suffering a torn ACL in the the Seattle Seahawks preseason game. After a long rehab process, Overshown made his impact felt on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. In just 11 snaps, he totaled three tackles, with an impressive one coming against the run at the line of scrimmage.

Overshown was the second highest graded Cowboys player in week one according to PFF with a 87.5 grade. When asked about his performance, he talked about getting the nerves out and being excited to get back to work.

“It felt good. You get out there and of course you have the nerves running, but that’s before every first play of a football game. Getting out there and being able to do what I’ve been waiting to do for a year, finally getting those butterflies out, it felt good. I’m actually looking forward to practice Tuesday now that I got a game under my belt.”

While 11 snaps isn’t much, it must have felt great for Overshown, who had to watch his rookie season from the sidelines. He even told Nick Harris of the Dallas Cowboys that while rehabbing, he would go in his garage and swat at flies just to feel some sort of achievement.

While his career might not have gotten off to an ideal start, Overshown has the chance to make a big impact for the Dallas Cowboys this season. In Mike Zimmer’s defense, it’s been reported that he will be lined up at the weakside linebacker. Zimmer has experience developing good linebackers at this level, with Eric Kendricks being one of them. Having Kendricks lined up next to Overshown at the middle linebacker can provide an opportunity to learn and develop from an experienced veteran in the league. Adding that to his athleticism and tackling ability, Overshown could be a real impact player for the defense in 2024.

His biggest obstacle is to stay healthy and feel confident after last year’s injury. He also needs to avoid new injuries, He’s currently a little nicked up but the Cowboys are hoping it is just a minor thing.
