Happy Father’s Day: Honoring 4 notable Cowboys dads

The father/son duo of Jerry and Stephen Jones have ruled the roost of this Dallas Cowboys organization for a while. Whether you love them or hate them, these two have been pulling a lot of strings and will continue to do so for years to come. With Stephen and siblings Charlette and Jerry Jr. a big part of the organization, Jerry might be one of the most successful dads in Dallas, but many other fathers deserve a little recommendation on this where we celebrate dads across the country.

Chris Vaughn

Father of Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn

We all have seen the special moment when Cowboys Assistant Director of College Scouting called his son asking him if he wanted to come to work with him. It was an emotional moment for the Vaughn family as the Cowboys made Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn their sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Chris Vaughn has been with the Cowboys since 2017 as the team’s southeast regional scout, but there was no nepotism when making this pick. We got a behind-the-scenes look at the Cowboys draft process and this was one of those moments when the stars just happened to line up perfectly, making this moment even more special.

Jim Garrett

Father of former Cowboys head coach/quarterback Jason Garrett

The Garrett name was a part of Dallas long before Jerry Jones took over the team. Jim Garrett was a talent scout for the Cowboys for 21 seasons, spanning five decades. He’s been a part of many remarkable draft hauls including players like Randy White and Too Tall Jones in the ‘70s to the slew of star players in the ‘90s that helped create the Cowboys dynasty. Garrett was also a big advocate for Randy Moss in 1998, although Jerry Jones did not listen to his advice. His three sons, John, Jason, and Judd were all on the Cowboys as players and then again in some capacity as either a coach or scout, with the most notable being Jason Garrett, the Cowboys head coach from 2011-2019.

Calvin Hill

Father of NBA Hall of Famer Grant Hill

One of those players Jim Garrett helped draft was running back Calvin Hill who played 12 seasons in the NFL with the first half of his career playing for the Cowboys. He was selected to the Pro Bowl four times, including an All-Pro season in his rookie year. He was the team’s only rookie All-Pro during the Cowboys’ first 55 years of existence, which is crazy considering they’ve now had four players achieve that feat over the last 10 years (Zack Martin, Ezekiel Elliott, Leighton Vander Esch, and Micah Parsons). He is the father of former Duke/Detroit Pistons star Grant Hill who played 18 seasons in the NBA.

Trevon Diggs

Father of NFL media legend Aidan Diggs

Okay, so we all know who Trevon Diggs is. The Cowboys All-Pro cornerback had 11 interceptions a few years ago. But those achievements are overshadowed by the lovable personality of his son, Aidan. Whether it’s catching passes from Dak Prescott in training camp or trash-talking Sauce Gardner during the Pro Bowl, Aidan always brings such a joyful energy and is quite amusing. Kids say the darndest things and we’ve just been fortunate enough to have some of Aidan’s comments caught on tape. We look forward to several more years of Little Diggs keeping us entertained.
