Jerry Jones offers updates (not really) on CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott extension talks

Jerry Jones met with the media following Tuesday’s Dallas Cowboys practice, one of the last to take place in Oxnard, and touched on a variety of things.

Aside from declaring that Trey Lance would make the 53-man roster (hardly shocking news there) he was asked about the biggest subject at hand these days, CeeDee Lamb.

This will also shock you, but Jerry had no real update. He said they were in good shape.

This is the same sort of comment that we have gotten from the organization since who knows when at this point. Week 1’s contest against the Cleveland Browns is less than three weeks away and the Cowboys have yet to officially work with their top wide receiver since their playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers over seven months ago.

For what it’s worth there continues to be chatter about Lamb from a variety of angles. ESPN’s Adam Schefter offered this late Monday night on the worldwide leader:

“There hasn’t been a lot of movement, but yet there continues to be a sense across the league that this deal will get done and that CeeDee Lamb will not miss any time and he’ll be there for the Cowboys’ regular season opener. Now, again, what goes against that is here we are on Monday, August 19th again. And CeeDee Lamb still isn’t in camp when there is a road map for all the top wide receiver deals. Field [Yates], we could sit down and have this deal hammered out before the end of this fantasy football marathon and yet the Cowboys and CeeDee Lamb continue to go on without striking a deal. Now at the very least, even if they are able to figure it out at some point this week, it’s going to take CeeDee Lamb a little bit of time to get back in shape. The conditioning factor. You can ask our injury expert Stephania Bell to ask about the chances of some sort of soft tissue, muscle strain when you come in this late and miss training camp. But the fact of the matter is I think most people believe this deal will get done and it’s a surprise that it’s not done to this point.”

This marked the second straight Monday where Schefter expressed confidence that a Lamb deal would get done, although last time he did it with a little more intensity.

But like with his previous remarks Schefter noted that it is surprising that this has still not gotten done. And to make matters more whatever you want to call it, these remarks came a week after the last ones and we are still here.

The Cowboys are just about done with their Oxnard portion of training camp as mentioned, and while that may be good news for members of the team missing home that is representative of just how much time Lamb has missed while this has gone on.

We are well past the point of logic and reason and are now at a place where conspiracy theories are running wild. Consider that CeeDee updated his Instagram story on Monday afternoon with a picture from what appears to be Spider-Man 3 and people were wondering if it was some sort of sign to the team.

Whether this was a message meant to reach the front office or just a shout out to a movie that received subpar reviews 17 years ago is a mystery that we will have to figure out another day.

As far as this day is concerned though it also featured a report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini by way of her Scoop City newsletter. She spoke rather confidently that a deal is coming here.

Later in the day on Tuesday though, NFL Network’s Jane Slater noted that nothing substantial has been going on as of late, even in the aftermath of Lamb’s cryptic post.

Round and round and round and round we continue to go.

We are going round and round on different things, by the way. Jerry also offered this update (not really an update) on the Dak Prescott contract situation.

Onward.
