Sunday will be only the 11th time the Cowboys open a season on the road against the AFC

When the Dallas Cowboys kick off against the Cleveland Browns they will be doing something rather rare as far as franchise history is concerned. This is true because we are finally about to reach the regular season, so if Brandon Aubrey wants to kick a 66-yard field goal then it will actually count in the record books. It is a pretty big bummer when something like that doesn’t, isn’t it?

Anyways, with things getting off the ground for real, the Cowboys are going to swim in waters they don’t dive in to all too often.

The Dallas Cowboys are set to visit an AFC team in Week 1 for just the 11th time in franchise history

In case you were unaware the Cowboys are about to kick off their 65th season. That is a lot of football.

Some quick math tells us that this means there have been 64 season openers before this Sunday’s. Throughout them all the team has only ever opened a game on the road against an AFC team 10 times. We are about to see the 11th.

We are talking about something that has happened just 16% of the time so it is again a rather rare thing. For whatever reason, NFL schedule-makers have not felt compelled to send the Cowboys to an AFC team during the first week of a season all too often.

Dallas Cowboys road games against AFC teams in Week 1

The Cowboys hold a 6-4 record in these particular games and incidentally are 2-0 against their next challenge in the Cleveland Browns. You will of course note that the cover image for this post was from their second trip there when the Cowboys visited the Browns to start the season in 2008.

Little quirks like this are always interesting to see, especially for a team that has been around as long as the Cowboys have. Here’s to hoping they can extend their unbeaten streak against the Browns to three.
