Trey Lance has a lot riding on his preseason performance with the Cowboys
One of the big training camp battles that was widely headlined for the Dallas Cowboys was QB Trey Lance competing with QB Cooper Rush for the team’s backup position. After the team traded a fourth-round pick for Lance last season, it felt like he could take the time under veteran QB Dak Prescott to improve his game, and eventually be the backup on the team. However, Lance has looked inconsistent throughout training camp. While he has had some bright moments, he has had some very poor moments as well. This interception thrown to safety Markquese Bell trended on social media.
With that said, Lance can put the doubt to bed with an impressive preseason. It was confirmed on Thursday that Prescott will likely not take a snap in preseason, allowing Lance and Rush the opportunity to take a lot of snaps.
Live-action reps are something that Lance desperately needs, as he hasn’t played since Week 2 of the 2022 season. While it is true that if Prescott stays healthy Lance likely won’t see any meaningful snaps throughout the 2024 regular season, but he has the opportunity to earn himself a new contract after the season. The Cowboys find themselves in a unique situation where all three of their quarterbacks are on a contract year unless they get a deal done with Prescott.
With uncertainty in the quarterback room, not only could an impressive preseason earn Lance a competitive market in free agency, the Cowboys could bring him back and continue to build with him for their future if Prescott moves on.
The Cowboys open up their preseason on Sunday against the Rams in Los Angeles at 4:30 PM ET. Which QB do you think will have the better performance, Rush or Lance?
